Beautiful amber color that seems to shine when the light hits it. Surprisingly strong aroma when the bottle is first opened. No question there is pumpkin in this one (amazing how that is not always obvious in pumpkin beers) and the roasted malts really cut through the other flavors!

Great redish tint on this one. No doubt there is cinnamon based on the aroma. There is a heavy caramel and cinnamon taste involved but it works great with the underlining pumpkin.

Super carbonated, resulting in a big head but beautiful dark amber color makes for a nice appearance. Very spicy aroma that continues into the taste, with a punch of clove that sticks around. Coats the mouth well, that plus the strong clove taste prevents this from being a session beer but even so, still enjoyable.

It’s a very dark brown that’s nearly opaque with not much of a head for a porter. The aroma is a little chocolaty. I’m not really a fan. It tastes like rancid Guinness. I will say it has a light feel, which is odd for a porter.

All around not a fan at all!

Granted, I’m not a coffee fan, but a beer that’s trying to taste like coffee… NO!!! That’s just wrong. I like the brief smell and taste of vanilla, but then the coffee takes the forefront and I was reminded of vomit. I’m really glad that I didn’t pour a whole glass of this.

I recommend that if you like coffee, or beer, do not drink this rot.

Not the appearance I would normally expect from a porter but pleasant enough. Nice tight head with a black, though light, body. There is no question this beer is going for the coffee crowd as the smell of coffee smacks you in the face as soon as you start pouring. I am a fan off coffee and very willing to try coffee “flavored” drinks but this falls short as the coffee bean taste is clear but not blended well with the other flavors. Somewhat malt heavy on the tongue with what is almost a cigarette ash after taste.

Atwater clearly tried too hard on this beer and over did the coffee flavoring instead of blending it into a drinkable beer.

This beer is about the perfect color in my opinion with a great red/brown color and virtually no head. It has a nice cherry smell, if a little sweet. The beer has a non-descript sweet flavor, kinda like someone added sugar to my beer. It’s not bad by any means and I’d probably get it again, but not as an everyday beer. It is a bit syrupy and kinda coats the tongue. While it’s not heavy by any means it is a little thick.

I really like this beer but it’s definitely a ‘once-in-a-while’ beer. It would be a little much on a regular basis.

I’m usually worried about clever names like this. It feels as if an enormously clever frat-boy, douche-bag got high one night and felt, I mean REALLY felt, that “Butt-head” would be an “Awesome!!” name. Fortunately, this beer wasn’t “that” bad. It was OK. The main detriment was the after taste. The initial taste was good but the after taste reminds me of a bad dish with some sort of fake cheese.

The amazing red color on this beer almost makes up for the minimal head that is present. At first smell there is clearly heavy alcohol but quickly a strong cherry aroma comes to the front. Overall taste on this beer is pleasant as long as it is in small doses. The thick feel and sweet flavors make this a wonderful beer but something that could not be a session drinker.

Beer Review - Scoring Breakdown

APPEARANCE: This is how the beer looks after it has been poured into an appropriate glass. Look at color, clarity, and head. Color can range from the palest straw yellow to pitch black, clarity from crystal clear to deep murk, and head from effervescent fizz to dense cream. Most important is your reaction to how it looks: is it inviting you to take a sip, pour it down the drain, or something in between?

AROMA: A significant chunk of beer enjoyment can come before you take your first sip. Bring the glass up to your nose and take a sniff. What does the smell remind you of? Keep in mind there can be lots going on here: sweetness, grass, flowers, perfume, spices, musk, toast, grain, berries, toffee, citrus, and more, often with weird combinations and surprises, await you in the beer’s “nose.” Are you intrigued, put off, or something in between?

TASTE: Here’s where the aroma evolves into something more. The tongue can detect sweet, sour, and bitter flavors in beer. Often, the themes established by the aroma continue more strongly in the taste. Sometimes, however, surprises await. A beer that comes on sweetly might have a bitter bite on the back of your tongue; a beer that promises hops might be more like honey than hoppy. Does the taste trip your trigger, gag you with a spoon, or something in between?

MOUTH FEEL: Quite literally, how the beer feels while in your mouth. Mouthfeel ranges from watery to syrupy. After you take your first sip, notice how this evolves, as some beers can start fairly dense, but then evaporate away, while others coat your mouth and refuse to leave. Think in terms of “body”: light, medium, and heavy, but also in terms of dynamics: cloying, effervescent, inviting. When it comes to what your beer’s doing in your mouth, do you dig it, hate it, or something in between?

HOLISTIC: Here you can rave about the beer that, on paper anyway, you should hate, or totally bag on a beer you’re “supposed” to love. Beer drinking is as much about the “experience” as it is the chemicals. We are opinionated animals, and with this category you can let your totally biased opinion fly. Did a beer defy your expectations? Reward it! Was it a crushing disappointment? Punish it! No wrong answers here, just what did you think of this particular beer on this particular day?

Each category gets 10 points. A 5 means “OK, that’s fine.” Anything that catches your attention in a positive way warrants additional points, and anything that catches your attention in a negative way warrants deducted points. Total them up, and you’ve got a number out of 50 that expresses your beer experience!

Almost Time

Dusting off the 'ol domain and going to try relaunching soon with fresh content.... hopefully this will include guest articles by some of my friends and readers, so if you have something let me know and perhaps we will include it on the site.

As the domain name states, this site is for Assorted Nerdery of all kinds.  Computer Nerdery, Music Nerdery, Food Nerdery, Movie Nerdery, Music Nerdery, Beer Nerdery, etc.  If there is a reason to be excited about a subject and "nerd" out about it this is the place!
