Games You Should Own: Saints Row 2 - Guest Article

This is a special guest article from my good friend Fritz, be sure to check out his great blog by following the link at the bottom of this post!

I'm not as big a gamer as I used to be. I used to buy just about every big name game that came out and play them pretty much non-stop until I had them beat. Now I usually buy only a few games a year and they last me months, so there are plenty of games that just fall through the cracks that I completely miss. Every once in a while, I go back and buy one of those games if I hear enough good things about them. About a week and a half back, I bought Saints Row 2. It might be the best $20 I've ever spent on a video game.

I never played the first Saints Row since I didn't have an Xbox 360 when it first came out and all I ever heard about it was that it was a Grand Theft Auto ripoff. And I didn't have any interest in the sequel since GTA 4 had come out by then and why buy a ripoff of a game you already own. Except Grand Theft Auto 4 got really boring, really quickly. GTA is always at it's best when it wasn't taking itself too seriously, which is all that GTA 4 did. I'm all for trying to tell a mature story about a former killer looking for redemption but it rings a little hollow when your character spends five minutes complaining about leaving that life behind and then goes out and kills 50 people for 5 grand because somebody asked him to. They changed the physics engine and made it more realistic, which made driving around town a lot less fun. There was also nothing really to do when you weren't doing a mission. I got about halfway through the game and just stopped because it just wasn't fun to me. Not to mention I wanted to shoot Roman in his stupid face.

It’s a very dark brown that’s nearly opaque with not much of a head for a porter. The aroma is a little chocolaty. I’m not really a fan. It tastes like rancid Guinness. I will say it has a light feel, which is odd for a porter.

All around not a fan at all!

Granted, I’m not a coffee fan, but a beer that’s trying to taste like coffee… NO!!! That’s just wrong. I like the brief smell and taste of vanilla, but then the coffee takes the forefront and I was reminded of vomit. I’m really glad that I didn’t pour a whole glass of this.

I recommend that if you like coffee, or beer, do not drink this rot.

Lighter than usual for a porter. Smells more like coffee then a beer. Taste really good if you like day-old coffee with club soda. Mouth feel is much too thin for a porter. This beer makes me feel depressed and I hate it.

I can’t stop crying and its Atwater Block Brewery’s fault!!

Not the appearance I would normally expect from a porter but pleasant enough. Nice tight head with a black, though light, body. There is no question this beer is going for the coffee crowd as the smell of coffee smacks you in the face as soon as you start pouring. I am a fan off coffee and very willing to try coffee “flavored” drinks but this falls short as the coffee bean taste is clear but not blended well with the other flavors. Somewhat malt heavy on the tongue with what is almost a cigarette ash after taste.

Atwater clearly tried too hard on this beer and over did the coffee flavoring instead of blending it into a drinkable beer.

This beer is about the perfect color in my opinion with a great red/brown color and virtually no head. It has a nice cherry smell, if a little sweet. The beer has a non-descript sweet flavor, kinda like someone added sugar to my beer. It’s not bad by any means and I’d probably get it again, but not as an everyday beer. It is a bit syrupy and kinda coats the tongue. While it’s not heavy by any means it is a little thick.

I really like this beer but it’s definitely a ‘once-in-a-while’ beer. It would be a little much on a regular basis.

I’m usually worried about clever names like this. It feels as if an enormously clever frat-boy, douche-bag got high one night and felt, I mean REALLY felt, that “Butt-head” would be an “Awesome!!” name. Fortunately, this beer wasn’t “that” bad. It was OK. The main detriment was the after taste. The initial taste was good but the after taste reminds me of a bad dish with some sort of fake cheese.

Lovely deep red color but no head at all. Smells like caramel, but in a good way. Very, very heavy alcohol taste that overpowers the other tastes way too much. Silky and smooth mouth feel but oh!!! that alcohol. This is definitely not a casual drinking beer, not unless you dig passing out early, but it’s good!

The amazing red color on this beer almost makes up for the minimal head that is present. At first smell there is clearly heavy alcohol but quickly a strong cherry aroma comes to the front. Overall taste on this beer is pleasant as long as it is in small doses. The thick feel and sweet flavors make this a wonderful beer but something that could not be a session drinker.
